How To Find A Co-Founder

Today I want to talk to you about finding a co-founder for your app business.

Here are a few things you can do, not only to attract co-founders, but also to create a great partnership with them so that you have a great relationship and more importantly, create something great that achieves what you are trying to achieve.

I think that over the next five years in most businesses, as things get more competitive, the more you work together, the more you partner with other people, the higher your chances of success.

1. Know who you are and find somebody who has the strengths that you do not have.

This is probably the biggest mistake that everyone who’s been in a partnership has made: You don’t want to get a co-founder who is your friend.

You want a co-founder who has complementary skill sets. You want somebody who can do something that you cannot. And they do it really well so that you can do something really well.

Be clear not only about what you want or the kind of person you want to get, but you got to be very clear about who you are. You got to play your strengths. Own who you are and be that person. That will allow you to go find other people who are different than you so that together you create something really great.

2. Be on the same page with people that you’re being a co-founder with.

Are you both on the same page? Do you have the same expectations of what this thing is going to do? Are you willing to do the same amount of work? Are you willing to put in the same amount of grit and perseverance to get this done? Do you both want it the same amount, or comparable amounts? Because if you don’t, that’s going to create a lot of problems.

3. Go meet people in person, build a relationship in person.

It’s really difficult to build a relationship if you're trying to find a co-founder on LinkedIn, AngelList or Quora, and try to talk to them on Skype or email.

You can live in different places but you got to meet up, know each other, build a relationship in person. The best way to do that is to go to local events, national events, international events, conferences, seminars.

Do as much as you can in person. That is how you are going to meet a co-founder who will help you create what you want to create, achieve what you want to achieve, who will be on the same page as you because you're going to build a relationship in person with someone who’s going to trust you and who you’re going to trust.

A lot of what finding a good co-founder is all about is the human element. The human spirit combined can often create something bigger than individuals can on their own. That is the key in business: understanding yourself and understanding people around you and how to bring them together to create something.

So as you go through your journey, keep your eyes open for other people. How can you work with them? How can you help them? How can they help you? These relationships naturally start to form and that is when really amazing things start to happen.

Definitely a SWOT analysis of the business that we want to do and a SWOT analysis of ourself is the first stage. The second one is find a co-founder whose SWOT analysis has S (strengths) that can overcome our W (Weakness). But there is little more that I would like share, by anatomy and psychology we all are created INCOMPLETE. We are constantly striving for that completeness through both personal and professional relationships, partnerships. Neurotransmitters like Dopamine Adrenaline Serotonin etc. help us to decide and go in for a partnership. But it is important to understand that we are not constantly in the same state of mind as these neurotransmitters are NOT constantly released, they are conditionally released and CONTROLLED by our VALUE SYSTEM. Most of the partnerships FAIL when VALUE SYSTEMS do not match. So even before going in for a partnership or finding a co-founder it is important to INTROSPECT and arrive at our value system and look out for co-founder whose Value system match, also has the strength that can overcome our weakness. It is interesting to observe how the various API’s are connected. An inward journey helps an outward journey. Hope you guys are having a wonderful weekend 🙂
